The Holocaust Awareness Museum is proud and excited to announce that the Anne Frank Theater Project has joined our efforts to educate the Greater Delaware Valley in our message of tolerance and diversity.

Starring Daniel Craig, Jaime Bell, and Liev Schreiber, Defiance (2009), an addition to the plethora of Holocaust and World War II films recently released, is about the Bielski Otriad, a group of Jewish partisans, survivors of Nazi pogroms in Poland. Based on the true story of four brothers who helped save over 1,200 Jews from the Nazis and their Polish collaborators, Defiance, directed by Edward Zwick, is a worthy film that attempts to portray Jews not as victims but as heroes, fighters, and survivors.

During the 1930s and 40s, the son of the founder of the Leica camera company, Ernst Leitz II and his daughter smuggled hundreds of Jews out of Germany before the Holocaust by assigning them to their oversea Leitz sales offices in Britain, France, Hong Kong, and the United States.

After Kristallnacht, November 9-10, 1938, many Jews in Germany decided it was time to leave because of rising antisemitism. By this time however, nearly five years after Adolf Hitler took power, many Jews had little money and it was increasingly difficult to obtain travel visas which were needed to leave and enter countries.
